George Cebra has been a professional musician for many years. He studied trumpet at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, played trumpet in the United States Marine Corps Band, attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston and studied bass violin with William Curtis and also Ortiz Walton of the “Boston Symphony Orchestra”. He then graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a degree in Music Education. In Boston, he performed with jazz greats such as Herb Pomeroy, Dick Johnson and Jimmy Mosher, also backing up singers like Billy Eckstine, Al Hibbler and the Four Freshmen at the “Surf Club” in Boston.
In New York City, Mr. Cebra had a trio at comedian Rodney Dangerfield’s Nightclub for a couple of years. Also played in the Show Bands at the “Living Room” and at the “Copacabana”, where he performed with Sylvia Sims, Bobby Short, David Allen, Brook Benton, Marilyn Michaels, Arthur Prysock, Billy Daniels, and Al Martino. He has been a bassist with the dance bands of Les & Larry Elgart, Richard Maltby, Sammy Kay, and Buddy Morrow.
George lived in Los Angeles for 10 years. He was house bassist at the Redondo Jazz in Redondo Beach, where he performed with Jazz greats like Sam Most, Jackie Kelso, Frank Strazzari, Marty Harris, Alan Broadbent, Frank Colette, Jack Wilson, and Freddie Red. He has also played at the famous ‘Lighthouse Jazz Club’ in Hermosa Beach with Dwight Dickerson and Lawrence Marable.
Mr. Cebra has been the bassist at many concerts sponsored by “The Committee on Jazz”, performing with such renowned artists such as Jerome Richardson, Oscar Braescher, Guido Mahones, Lou Matthews, Sherman Ferguson, Billy Higgins, Bob Efford, Benny Powell, Herman Riley and Buster Cooper.
He was a member of the “Larry Gales Bass Choir”, performed live concerts sponsored by KKGO, the Los Angeles Jazz Station. The Bass Choir had also been doing educational concerts at local colleges. George has also been bassist for the “Billy Brooks Band”, which gave ‘History of Jazz’ concerts for the Los Angeles City School System. He also freelanced with many local orchestra and chamber groups.
Mr. Cebra has also performed in Japan at the “Penthouse Club” in Akasaka, the “Blue Shell Jazz Club” in Roppongi, the “English Pub” in Shinjuku and many other renowned night clubs in Tokyo.
George moved to Palm Springs, California in 1983 with his wife Fumiko, where he performed with the “Joe Master’s Trio” for 4 years. He currently freelances with Local Jazz Groups and Chamber Music Groups. He has been a bassist for over 20 years with the “Coachella Valley Symphony Orchestra”. An Instrumental Music Teacher for the “Reimer School of Music”, he enjoys playing more than anything. Besides all that, Mr. Cebra owns “Sakura Japanese Style Bed and Breakfast Inn” in Palm Springs, California.
